Just like a retired body builder loses muscle mass after he gives up the competitive sport, a mind that stops being used will slowly retire.

Radical Islam Threatened by Hollywood

Not long ago, I ran across an article on the web-an Associated Press release-that included the following passage (quoted verbatim):

Elsewhere in the northwest, a car bomb exploded close to a movie theater in the city of Peshawar [in Pakistan], killing at least six people and wounding 80 others, witnesses and police officer Saleem Khan said. Authorities blamed militants that have targeted theaters before in the region, believing them to be un-Islamic.

The article, entitled U.N. seeks $543 million for Pakistan refugees, was originally published at this link. It has since been updated by the Associated Press and no longer includes the passage cited above. The same news story, Bomb at Pakistan movie house kills 6, may also be found at this link, which also contains a similar passage as follows:

Militants have targeted movie theaters in the region in the past, charging that the businesses violate the tenets of Islam. Pakistan's Dawn News television channel reported that some theaters in the area have recently received threats from the Taliban, and that a few theater owners have shut down.

I find these passages to be particularly eye-opening as they clarify and put into sharp relief what radical Islam and, for that matter, any sort of religious extremism, represents to the world of culture and the arts-which naturally includes cinema. Religious extremists are invariably threatened by the arts because the arts represent freedom of expression and a representation of the truth. Religious extremists, like the Taliban and other repressive theocracies of the world, which base their very existence on propaganda and authoritarian dogma, invariably find themselves at odds with artists and artistes of all kinds.

Islamic radicalism has always been about repression-the suppression of individual freedoms and the violation of human rights. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the same fanatical theocracies that have no qualms about resorting to outright brutality to protect and further their social, political and religious agendas-a fact that the world is witnessing only too clearly with recent events in Iran-would feel threatened by culture, the arts and, most recently, by Western cinema, as evidenced by the recent bombings of movie theaters in Pakistan orchestrated by the Taliban.

From the earliest of times, Islamic culture has been characterized by a particularly intense hostility towards imagery or rendering. Some of this fanaticism may be justified by Islamic apologists as an attempt to assert the peculiar brand of monotheism that Muslims adhere to. And, of course, there is no denying the cultural achievements of the past, in such Islamic cultural centers as Beirut, Lebanon and Baghdad, Iraq. However, it cannot be denied that the radical Islamic movement of recent times, as epitomized by the likes of the Taliban and Al Quaeda, have displayed a pretty ruthless hostility towards all forms of artistic representation. And this destructiveness has been felt only too keenly in such Islamic cultural centers as Beirut and Baghdad, which are now wastelands thanks to decades of sectarian violence and brutality.

In March 2001, in fact, the Taliban ordered the destruction of two gigantic, ancient statues of the Buddha in the Bamiyan province of Afghanistan-an act of ruthless vandalism against art and culture-against historical artifacts of immense archaeological importance and cultural value-an act that many believe was an ominous precursor to the destruction, only six months following, of another pair of monoliths of immense socio-cultural importance, namely the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in the great Western cultural center of New York City. Arguably, the destruction of the World Trade Center on 9/11 is an undeniable expression of a deep-seated hostility for Western art, culture and, in this case, architecture, on the part of radical Islamic factions.

After all, if Islamic radicals like the Taliban, Al Quaeda and the Ahmadinejad regime in Iran have no problem with murdering thousands of innocent civilians (by sponsoring terrorism) or engaging in brutal misogynistic practices or controlling their populations with an iron fist through religious dogma, can it be at all surprising that they would find Western cinema threatening? One has to wonder: how many Hollywood movie stars would feel the least bit comfortable having any dealings with the likes of the Taliban or Al-Quaeda or the Iranian regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? And, furthermore, how agreeable would Hollywood or Las Vegas, with their culture of over-the-top extravagance, be to the average Islamic radical?

I have no doubt that when the likes of Osama bin Laden condemn Western and, in particular, American culture as inimical to the tenets of radical Islam, what they have in mind are such cultural centers as Hollywood and Las Vegas-cities whose culture has always been about extravagance and excess of every kind. For a religion that enforces draconian dietary regulations and forbids the consumption of alcoholic beverages, Hollywood would have to be a profound anathema!

No wonder that the Taliban and other Islamic radicals feel compelled to bomb movie theaters in Peshawar, Pakistan!

You call the site "dog-barking-solutions.blogspot.com" or something like that, and you provide a link to the sales page that you are promoting.

A very cool thing about those sites is: Google loves them. So most of the time, within one day your new, free money making webpage will show up in Google search results! You can just check by Googling for "dog barking solutions".

But unfortunately it won't be on first page yet.. And to really get money from Google, you need to rank on the first page of search results, so people will actually click on your link and buy the product you are promoting.

So we have the page set up, and it shows up in Google (somewhere on page 9 or so). Now how are we going to get it to that magical first page?

Simple. We rinse and repeat.

The most important factor for getting a good ranking in search results nowadays, is the number of links pointing to your webpage. So we just make more free pages like the first one.. Exept this time, we don't link to the sales page that we are promoting.. We link to the "dog-barking-solutions.blogspot.com" page that we made!

So every day you write an article in 30 minutes or an hour at most, make a new free webpage, and link to the first page you made. Usually within a few weeks, but within two months at most (depending on the level of competition) you will have the result you were after: Money from Google with zero investment!

If you're new to website promotion then I'm sure you've read a couple of guides recently on how to do it. One of the first things you do is submit your site to as many directories as you can. It doesn't get you a whole lot of traffic but it does give you links that the search engines will crawl.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money to list your site then you are going to do a lot of reciprocal linking. That means you're going to end up with a long list of links that all go to directories. Not to mention that reciprocal linking carries less weight than one-way links when Google crawls them. But that's a discussion for a different time.

The point at hand is this: before you can submit your link to a directory you must already have their link in place. Here is the brilliance of it all. When they set up their directory, the forced link doesn't have to lead back to them. It could lead to Yahoo, Google, or theDumbestDomain.net! It really doesn't matter. As long as you have that link in place, you can submit your link to them free of charge.

With that said, let's think about how we can turn this into our advantage. If you had your own directory, you could force your business domain onto any site that wanted a free link from you. You could even set up a price list for featured and regular one-way links to make you a little extra money too! It's not as hard as you might think either.

To set up a directory you need 3 things..

A domain name
A hosting account with PHP, and MySQL
and a Directory Script like PHP Weby

Installing the script takes about ten minutes and then setting it up takes about an hour. You have to set up your entire category structure and all of the individual settings. Once you're done, exchange links with every other directory you can find. Eventually you'll have plenty of links out there.

It's not completely automated however. You will still need to approve the links before they will show up in your directory. So for every link you get out there, you'll have to click a button. Sounds like a lot of hard work huh?

The Death of AdSense?

Well love it or hate it, it is not dead. The only people saying it is dead are those that have been slapped by Google and experienced a big drop in earnings. Okay for sure AdSense earnings have taken a tumble since the big guys changed their AdWords policy and took most keywords up from 25 cents to $2+. So admittedly this will have caused some advertisers to throttle back on their spending. However there is a big plus as a result of this change for ad publishers not a negative as some will tell you. So what is the upside I hear you cry?

Money, plain and simple and that is the truth. As a result of some words going up in price eightfold or more this means that as an AdSense publisher the same click is now potentially worth eight times as much revenue to you. Indeed I have seen 25 cent clicks now bring me in just under $4, which has to be a good thing right. On a good day I hear one of the top Gurus Michael Cheney breaks $1,000 per day.

Also if AdSense is dead then why isn't Google going bust? It makes its money from AdWords revenue, and as it still makes a profit of several hundred million then at a fair guess it still has a lot of advertisers spending huge amounts of money on advertising. Hence by default it is also still paying out a lot to its publishers as thousands of people are not simply closing down their websites or removing all the ads are they?

So whilst people may have seen a drop in there AdSense income if you are in it for the long game then you will continue to make money with the ad programme.

On the surface, making money with AdSense is pretty simple and straight forward. All you have to do to earn a check, is to get people to click on the ads being displayed on your site. The big G, aka Google, handles the rest of the equation. The question is:

How do you get people to your site in the first place?

It follows that people have to come visit your site in the first place. Once they are at your site, your visitors have to click on one of the ads that are being displayed. Without people clicking on ads, you make no money.

To get people to your site, and make them want to click on an ad, you need to create content.

That's right, it's that dirty word phrase of content creation coming back to haunt you. You have to have unique content that actually adds value to the reader's life stream. Forget about using articles with Private Label Rights (PLR). Let me tell you why.

Look at your site through your visitor's eyes

Imagine this: Going to a site that has the same content that countless other sites have. The same articles and the same wording etc. How does that help the visitor? Why would a visitor click on anything on that site? That's the poor experience that visitors get when they visit a site that uses PLR articles.

Now imagine this: Going to a site that has good original content, and on that site there's a nicely placed, well blended ad for a product that meets your visitor's needs. Automatically, just because this site has original content that is interesting it makes the visitor trust it more. Since there's more trust, the visitor is more likely to click on the ads on the page thus making the site owner a few cents.

Focus on creating quality content for your site, focus on driving traffic to your pages. Spend some time creating relevant keyword rich pages that aren't spammy. If you do that, you'll get people to click on your ads and earn that check from Google.

Stop Selling and Start Giving!

Recently I found myself chatting with a marketing consultant who expressed some frustration with a client's attempts at writing his own PR: "He's a great businessman, he's a strong writer, but he tries to turn everything into an ad."

A salesperson's natural instinct is to sell. When given an opportunity to appear in print, we all feel an urge to bombard that empty space with the details of how great we are and why. But we must remember that the only article that interests readers is one that gives them something of value instead of simply lunging for their wallets. Tell us why we should care how great you are.

A press release usually solves this problem by announcing an item of community interest. Your company's grand opening, improved product line, or expanded service area is a news piece, and your readers gain immediately by knowing more about what's happening in their town or neighborhood. A sufficiently large announcement attracts the regional or national press, but the operating principle works on any scale -- a good press release informs first and markets second.

What about other forms of marketing writing we can use to win readers' interest in our business? Again, the key is to give them something attractive or helpful. Here are a couple of examples:

Solve a problem. How many of us have ever needed a quick, authoritative answer to some vexing question, from how to unclog a drain to how to choose a business broker? Post an online article providing ready answers to a question, and you've taken a thorn out of your lion's paw. Add your company's contact information to the bottom of the article, and that lion will reach out to you the next time a similar thorn causes pain.

Entertain. A funny, touching, or exciting human interest story makes a great feature article. Entertaining your readers is a surefire way to grab their attention and make them want to learn more about your products or services. And true-life stories can be powerful testimonials. Touch their hearts and they'll think of you when it's time to buy.

When we educate instead of sell, we become givers instead of takers. And as BNI is so fond of saying --givers gain!
